Located in southeast Florida on the Atlantic coast (about 66 miles north of Miami), West Palm Beach is one of Florida's most popular tourist locations. And if this city of about 101,000 residents is the destination of your moving truck rental, you're heading for an area called The Gold Coast. How did it get that nickname? Rumor has it that centuries ago, several Spanish galleons sank there and dumped their treasures on the ocean floor.
Incorporated in 1894, West Palm Beach was settled in the 1870s and 1880s. It was originally spelled “Westpalmbeach” (one word). But the unwieldy 13-letter name was feared to be unlucky, so the current spelling stuck. The primary industry back then was farming tropical fruits and vegetables for shipment to the northern states. Today, tourism and construction join agriculture in the economic equation.
One of the wettest cities in the nation, West Palm Beach has an average winter daytime temperature of 74 degrees and 90 degrees in the summer. So when the sun is out, it's no surprise that many residents like to take in a round or two of golf. Palm Beach County has more than 150 public and private golf courses. And for lovers of another lawn sport, the area's National Croquet Center has 12 full-size croquet lawns, which makes it the largest dedicated croquet facility in the world.
Visiting the area's many parks is another popular outdoor pastime. West Palm Beach County operates about 80 parks encompassing a total of about 8,000 acres. And many of these parks are perfect for boating, swimming, camping, hiking and fishing. Favorite destinations include Dyer Park, Flamango Lake, Lake Lytal, Stacy Street, Stub Canal and Lake Belvedere Estates. There's even Pooch Pines at Okeeheelee Park—a facility built specifically for canine recreation!
Like its parks, West Palm Beach's neighborhoods are picturesque and inviting. You'll find some of the area's most popular addresses in El Cid, Clematis Street, Northboro Park, Grandview Heights, Flamingo Park, Northboro Park, Central Park and the Northwood Hills Historic District. The Bel Air Historic District, West Northwood Historic District and the Old Northwood Historic District are also worth a visit.
You'll have a hard time running out of things to see and do in West Palm Beach. Attractions that you need to see—or see at least one more time if you're moving away from the area—include the Norton Museum of Art, the International Polo Hall of Fame, Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park, the South Florida Science Museum and McCarthy's Wildlife Sanctuary. Other favorites include the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, Okeeheelee Park, Peanut Island, Grass Waters Nature Preserve, Mounts Botanical Garden, Apoxee Wilderness Trail and the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.
